Supraregional project

"Fortis Saxonia eV" supports the team "ecoemotion" from the HS Merseburg and the HKD Burg Giebichenstein Halle in the development and realization of a new vehicle. The hydroponics project was founded for this purpose. Both teams can play to their strengths and build a vehicle that is convincing in terms of both design and energy balance. To be more precise: An ecologically valuable vehicle is being developed with generous space that is suitable for everyday use and which also scores with pioneering technology.

More than 2 years of development have gone into the Nios urban concept car. The aim was to use natural materials and to use comparatively little plastic. In this way, the vehicle could be built from around 70% recyclable materials. On April 6, 2010, the Nios was only able to present itself as a bare wooden frame. The next day should show whether it will be completed by the AMI opening.

For the time being, this supraregional cooperation is planned over a period of 2 years. This new urban concept car competed for the first time at the Shell Eco-marathon 2010. This collaboration of 3 Central German teams is also a novelty at the SEM '10. The first success, the design award in the Urban Concept class, was celebrated during SEM '10. In 2011 the optimized version of the nios will be launched in order to occupy a demanding place in the overall ranking with improved drive technology.

In addition to the built-in natural materials, modern LED technology is also used for the front and rear lights. Displays were installed in the cockpit that give the driver a better overview of the vehicle. On April 10th the time had come. The Nios was presented to the public for the first time over a week at the AMI. Many interested visitors were enthusiastic about the new urban car. Nios was also able to show that alternatives to our current vehicles not only mean restrictions, but also go hand in hand with good design and solid technology.

The Nios in action
Exactly one month later, Nios had to prove his skills at the Shell Eco-Marathon. Due to the bad weather it was only possible to take part in one race, as the track was only released for May 7th. Nios survived the first 30km drive at the Lausitzring with ease. At the subsequent award ceremony, the new urban concept car received the Shell design award. A first high point in the still young history of the vehicle. Other teams and the press also showed interest in the extraordinary vehicle. And not only because of the design, but also because of the spacious structure.

The Nios is still on display at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and can be viewed there.
