TUCdiscover - University Information Day 2022

June 11th - University Library, Chemnitz

The information day of the TU Chemnitz was finally held in person again this year. On this day, students and parents had the opportunity to find out more about the various programms and of course they could also discover the student initiatives at Chemnitz University of Technology. That's why we took the opportunity to stop by with our vehicle EcoBee.

3rd youth climate conference in Saxony 2022

June 11th - Central Lecture Hall, Chemnitz

At the same time, the 3rd Saxon Youth Climate Conference took place in the central lecture hall of the University of Technology in Chemnitz. Pupils were offered a platform to exchange ideas about climate protection, energy transition, mobility of the future and sustainability. It was therefore a pleasure for us to be on the market of possibilities with our vehicle the UrbanSax and to talk about our project and our activities.

Shell Eco marathon 2022

May 31st to June 3rd - Assen, Netherlands

After a long break, the Shell Eco-marathon in Assen (Netherlands) took place on the race track again this year and our team was also able to qualify for the event in the preliminary rounds with the UrbanSax. So we set off for the Netherlands on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, in the early hours of the morning. When we got there, we still had enough time to do the final work, since the last step was due on Thursday: the technical inspection.
Unfortunately, our control unit failed for unknown reasons, which meant that the motor could no longer be controlled, which made the vehicle unfit to drive.

We tried to fix this problem up to the last second, but unfortunately there was not enough time. The disappointment of the team was huge as we had been preparing for this day for months. Nevertheless, we can be proud that we passed most of the inspection with flying colours. Our power train team is already working on new ideas to avoid the problem in the future. Despite these circumstances, it was a pleasure for us to be able to actively participate in a competition with the team again after such a long break and we are already looking forward to the SEM 2023. You can find more impressions of our days at the SEM on our Instagram. We would like to thank all participants, sponsors and all the people who have supported us in the process and continue to do so!

Shell Eco marathon

This year it's finally that time again, the Shell Eco-marathon is about to start. The whole team gathered on December 9th, 2022 to take part in the quiz to prepare for the competition. Thanks to the active participation of our team, we made it to 22nd place in the Europe and Africa region. Now it's just a matter of completing the vehicle and looking forward to the competition.

With the digital learning platform "textile trainer" ( https://my.textil-trainer.de ), on which basic textile knowledge is clearly and comprehensibly prepared and accessible free of charge, the Chair of Textile Technologies (Head: Prof. Dr. Holger Cebulla) of the Technical University of Chemnitz and chemmedia AG work against the shortage of skilled workers in Saxony. In this joint project, they support the Saxon textile industry in the training and further education of future employees and also secure knowledge for the future.

Practical educational content is now also provided by the student initiative Fortis Saxonia e. V. elaborated. This team at Chemnitz University of Technology has been developing energy-saving vehicles since 2006 and has 15 years of experience. “Our chassis is made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced plastics, i.e. material with a proportion of plastic and a proportion of carbon fiber. That is what is colloquially known as carbon, ”explains Nico Bohn from Fortis Saxonia. “These so-called composites enable us to develop particularly light and therefore energy-efficient vehicles. This overlaps with the research area of the Textile Technologies Professorship, so the cooperation started some time ago, ”Marc Fleischmann continues. He used to be a member of the team himself and is now a research associate at the Textile Technologies Professorship.

As a result of the cooperation, the new course "Composites - fiber-reinforced plastics" can now be seen on the portal my.textil-trainer.de. The course describes how a car door can be built from composites. This is explained using the example of the UrbanSax vehicle, which was developed by Fortis Saxonia in 2019. “We design our courses in a practical way and prefer to use examples from the region to show their potential. The cooperation with Fortis Saxonia shows that the good is often so close. Using your example, we can explain to our learners how a fabric can be turned into a car door, ”says Anna Lanfermann, research assistant in the research area Sustainable Textiles and Digital Education at the Textile Technologies Professorship and“ textile trainer ”project manager.

“The textile trainer is also helpful for our team,” explains Bohn. “At Fortis Saxonia, students from different fields come together. This is exactly where the textile trainer comes in. Thanks to the easily understandable courses in this interdisciplinary team, even those who do not get access to the topic through their studies have access to the topic. This is particularly helpful to our members who are studying a subject outside of mechanical engineering, for example in the areas of public relations and electrical engineering, ”continues Bohn.

The knowledge platform my.textil-trainer.de, which has been available online for free since the end of 2020, is enjoying growing popularity. Over 830 people are currently registered. "Almost every day new people register on the platform and leave positive feedback," says Lanfermann happily.

Deutschlandstipendium

On the occasion of the ten-year anniversary of the Deutschlandstipendium, a video competition was started to present the scholarship recipients' volunteer projects.

Our work continues...

While teamwork currently only takes place online, individual activities can still be continued. Here a team member uses products from our partners Vector Group and Altium Design to develop the control unit for the new UrbanSAX lights.
